No more Dick Butkus.....

Had to find out who it was.

Wow... I'm no football fan and even I knew who Dick Butkus was. I'm impressed...I thought I was really detached from pro-football.

My brother in law, now deceased, had a brother (also now deceased)who was the on campus Priest where Butkus was.

Father Ed would often tell me stories that started out with: "Oh yes, dear Dickie, and that's what I called him, Dickie, was a nice young man, I knew him well."

I'd giggle at this stories as if to say "Are we talking about the same Dick Butkus?"
And he'd reply "yes, same young man".

Not a different breed of cat, the consequences back then were almost nothing. If you were a name, the law and the judges kind of looked the other way. I used to love bar room fights, but because I was otherwise clean and with Mother Green it would be called "mutual combat" or a tiny small fine as long as no one was tooooo F. U.ed and no record. Now a days it is a major court case for hurting someone's feelings. We have taught a whole generation or two NOT to be men!!!

Was at a Detroit Lions game vs Chicago in the late 60's. Butkus chased Lions wide receiver Charlie Sanders into the bleachers where we were sitting to tackle him. Probably 10 rows into the stands next to us. Animal ! !

I played linebacker in high school football.
Mr. Butkus was a hero mentor to many of us at that time.
If he was playing I was watching.
I had a great Friday but I am very sad now.
