There are many factors that can explain a discrepancy in the numbers between the US and the UK,
Durr, it's called the metric system.

It's not just the cops -- the overall homicide rate is much higher in the U.S. than the U.K., and always has been.

Of course the raw numbers of deaths don't tell you who the aggressor was -- only who won.

Scott is seen in the video sprinting away from the officer and appears to clear at least 15 feet before Slager fires the first of eight shots. Dressed in a green shirt and jeans, Scott stumbled and then crumpled face first into the grass.

"Shots fired," Slager said into his radio as he closed in on Scott.

"Put your hands behind your back!" the officer shouted as he circled the body with his gun drawn.

Slager cuffed Scott's hands before jogging back to his original position where he appeared to pick something off the ground. Another officer arrived as Slager returned to Scott and tossed an object, apparently the stun gun, next to the 50-year-old's body.

If people did not do stupid things, they might not get shot by the police.
Perhaps you think that's hyperbole. It isn't. People — innocents, unarmed people, bystanders, even cops themselves — get killed in police armed responses. We talk about excessive force by police all the time. But don't listen to us. Just listen to the news, and the names. Jose Guerena, shot to death as he tried to defend his family in a raid that yielded no drugs. Aiyana Jones, 7, shot to death by a SWAT team as she slept in her bed. Salvatore J. Culosi Jr., accidentally shot in the chest with a .45 during a SWAT raid. Bounkham Phonesavanh, called "Bou Bou" by his family, critically burned by a flash-bang thrown into his crib — into his goddamned crib — by a SWAT team during a raid. Krystal Barrows, shot in the head during a raid by a cop who didn't even realize he had fired his gun. Autumn Mae Steele, shot to death by a police officer responding to a domestic violence call (he was aiming at her dog). Alberto Sepulveda, 11, shot in the back with a shotgun as he lay prone on his floor during a SWAT raid. James Jensen Jr., a SWAT officer, shot by his partner and friend ruing a raid. I could do this all day. The list goes on and on.

Also:
If you don't want police to shoot your dog when they come to notify you that your son has been murdered, then don't have a son who is a homicide victim.

If you don't want to be threatened with investigation by the District Attorney's Office, then don't charge a deputy prosecutor for lap dances, and certainly don't make him pay the cover.

If you don't want your yard dug up, don't get accused by psychics of having buried bodies there.

If you don't want your collie shot, then don't let her cross the path of a cop with a demonstrated history of violence.

If you don't want to be reduced to drinking your own urine while abandoned in custody over the weekend, don't smoke pot near a DEA facility that is understaffed.

If you don't want police knocking on your door at midnight, then be available at midnight if they want to dispute something you wrote about them in the newspaper.

If you don't want your disabled son beaten, pepper-sprayed, and tased, then get him a speech pathologist so police won't think he's dissing them. They're sensitive.

If you don't want to get kicked, then let go of the ****ing ball, Rover. What's your issue?

If you don't want to be arrested, don't use a cell phone near an officer who is a Star Trek fan.

If you don't want to be pepper-sprayed and tased and "trip and fall on the pavement," then ANSWER THE ****** QUESTION, is that so hard?

If you don't want to be tased, then don't take an aggressive stance in bed, grandma! Jesus. You're 86, you should know better.

If you don't want your grandmother to go to prison, don't have a cold.

Really, if you've paid attention in America for the last half-century — if you've watched the law-and-order platitudes dominating politics, if you've seen the mindless worship of people who have guns and badges, if you've seen what conduct is tolerated, excused, and even cheered — all of this would really be common sense, wouldn't it?
I don't feel like copying all of the links in that one; go read it at http://popehat.com/2013/07/12/if-you-dont-want-to-be-tased/
