Do like I did at a baseball game a few weeks ago. The anthem started and everyone in the skybox ignored it and continued talking, I removed my hat and and went hand over heart my wife did the same. Suddenly everyone quit talking and were all facing the flag. I did this in the middle of a conversation as soon as I heard the anthem, shut up and pop too. You'll set a much better example and reminder.

I don't say the pledge and I don't sing the anthem. I will remove my hat out of respect, but I do not put my hand over my heart during either.

It is not out of disrespect for veterans, I just don't believe in pledges or national anthems.

While I will agree no one should be talking or being disrespectful during either, I will say that any righteous indignation over people NOT saying it is an overreaction.

Jehovah's Witness?

AS to the OP. I agree. It is annoying as I'll get out when you don't show the respect. I have had several friends who are Jehovah's Witnesses. They sure don't salute the flag, but they keep their mouths shut while we do. I probably am reading to much into it, but I think it all goes back to the attitude parents are putting in kids today. You get everything handed to you, and don't have to work for it. The world is your oyster to do with as you please. They don't know what it means to do without or have to work for something, so they don't understand the sacrifice's made by others for their cushy life, so they don't respect them.

Now for the OU sidebar topic: I HATE it when they change it to "sooners." It makes me furious. I have several OU fans who think it is a disgrace to do it as well, but have several who say "we're just showing pride in our school/ team!" I agree with the sentiment, but to me it seems like they are placing pride in their team over pride in their country by butting in on the song dedicated to our country. I get really annoyed when I hear it at a Sooner game, get down right pissy when I hear it at a Thunder game, a local high school game, a rodeo, etc....

I don't have much respect for anyone who will dismiss the national anthem. However, just because some of the OU fans decided to change the last word from "brave" to "sooners" some people seem to get their panties in a wad. It's not like they made the last word something insulting, it's just the home of the Sooners (aka the OU stadium) while the USA is the home of the brave.
Come on dude. What place does it have at a rodeo and one that was not even here in Ok?

I was in Branson a few weeks ago. They kick off the day's fountain shows with the National Anthem, and my wife and I and several others from our church were walking across the plaza as the announcement was made. I stood to and sang as best I could. It was interesting to watch the other people (maybe 50) on the plaza. You could easily pick out the vets - those standing at attention with hands saluting or over the heart. It was a little disturbing to see so many people ignoring what was going on around them, walking and talking as the music played.

I feel like I'm getting old.

Lead by example. Stop, remove hat, hand on heart at attention. When it's over, tell them all they are idiots, and move on. I do agree though, it should be perfectly fine to smack someone who does not respect our anthem!

Nope. The Pledge was written just over 100+ years ago by a socialist, Francis Bellamy. "Under God" was not added until the 1950s. The pledge has no relation to the principles of this country in my eyes. There is also no reason to pledge an allegiance to a flag.

As to the national anthem, it is a good song written by Francis Scott Key and set to an older British tune. It was not made the anthem until the 1930s.

These things all sound very nice, but they have no real value.

EDIT: I should add that I cannot understand why we must pledge or commemorate by song the State. It seems like we are honoring the State. Why should we? It serves us, we do not serve it.

I was referring to when the anthem is sung in the OU stadium. Some jack-off saying "sooners" when it's not an OU home game is just a jack-off making other fans look bad.
