I rode in the back of a pickup all the time when I was a kid. Times were different in that there was not as much traffic and it seemed people were more careful driving. Not to mention no cell phones or people eating fast food. With that being said, none my grandchildren are riding in the bed.
I remember sitting in the truck while parents shopped at the grocery ALL THE TIME when I was around 10 or so. Many occasions, the truck somehow also mysteriously had moved locations. They didn't leave the keys, but I had a clutch
All driver's exams should require you to be able to eat a burger, talk on a cell phone and shift gears at the same time.
