If you can or want to afford it go for it. My son has gaming consoles. Yes I said consoles like 5 different types. Over the years he wanted the newer ones. I wouldn’t personally spend 1600 for a computer for him. The most I am going to spend is 800.

Why....

get them kids outside....

let him build a old car for himself...
I was thinking the same thing.
If I wanted a toy or a vehicle or a bicycle I had to buy it with money i earned.
I mowed a lot of lawns and recycled a lot of aluminum cans that i walked many miles to find.

Maybe he has earned the computer though.
I am not one to know the answer to that question.

But if you build it get him some hands on and teach him how to build it.

So far I have it around $1600 building it through CLX. Are there better options?
I built my 14yo a gaming pc for about that price. Motherboard RAM Processor VIDEO CARD are all top priorities. power supply just needs to be adequate case can be had at 50 or less Games are huge these days I wouldnt build with less than 4TB hard drive. upgrades in the future is the key. Yes mine plays his PC, But we also make sure to offset with outside. I picked most of his parts up from Newegg

Seems kinda pricey, I can build a pretty stout working/virtualization machine for that.

What's the kid play?
Are you comfortable with building it yourself/together?
does he want a snazzy case? Fancy Lights?
Do you already have keyboard/mouse/monitor?
Need wifi? Extra Harddrive space?
Do you have an existing computer he is migrating from? If so, what is it, what operating system?
What operating system do you want?

For some of the games I play, $1600 would be adequate. Not cutting edge, though - some corners would have to be cut ;)
