20 inch 6.5 Grendel and Nosler 120gr ballistic tip killed 4 last fall for me. Longest shot was 225yds. I like how the Grendel maintains velocity staying supersonic a long way
I also have a 16" 7.62×39 upper shooting 154gr softpoints I want to use this coming fall. And a 300 Blackout shooting 130gr I like shooting.
I use LPVO scopes I bought from Tacticon
1-6×24 on the Grendel and a 1-4 version on the 30 cal guns

I'm a blackout guy. Barnes TacTX out of a rifle length barrel, they will give you a good kill zone that you can point and shoot out to distance you're talking with a 1-4.

I'd have to look again but IIRC a 60yd zero gives you +/- 2" out to 250ish with above setup

.223 60gr Nosler Partition
.300 Blackout 125gr Nosler Ballistic tip
7.62x39 125gr ballistic tip or 123gr ballistic tip factory loads

Killed deer with all of those but the factory loads, 2gr difference between those and my handloads.

My first choice though is one I don't have and that would be 6.8spc. Some day lol.

what are your recommendations with hunting with the ar15? barrel length, rails and scopes etc.
I’ve killed dozens with a .55 grain soft point over the years with red dots or scopes. Typically Nikon Monarchs, but Nikon doesn’t build scopes any more so it would be Night Force or Vortex for future purchases.
Deer don’t take a lot of killing as long as one has the proper bullet, respects the distances of that bullet to properly perform, and put it where it belongs.

Thank You all for the information. i have used 75 grain 223 in a bolt gun and an ar15 and it worked just fine. but the ar15 i was using is a 16 inch patrol carbine. i think i would like to get a more streamlined upper with a 20 inch barrel and a rail with low gas block and no sights. just for hunting.

There is a 6.8 SPC II upper for sale in the classifieds if you're interested in that caliber.

If I was going to be doing much deer or hog hunting, that's what I would most likely choose, although I do have a 8" 300 BO pistol that I'm curious about using on those critters with 110gr V-max.
