Picked up where I left off the other day sorting brass. Mainly picking out the .223/5.56 and separating the Lake City from other headstamps. Got one ice cream bucket overflowing with Lake City (bottom) and the other ice cream bucket a little over half full with other headstamps (in the bucket). Underneath that is a bunch of 9mm and .45acp and some 5.7... One ziploc bag has 6.5cm and the other is mixed with 45-70, .308, 6.5carcano.

Going to decap the Lake City and get them tumbled and cleaned up.

Maybe someday I’ll load up some .223.

I have never heard of .307 for
30-30. Why is that?

I like to clean first then sort. it is easier for me to read the headstamp that way.
I deprime all with a universal deprimer then off to the tumbler.

I keep them all together. Most of it's blasting ammo anyway. Maybe lazy, but I just process them all together.
I did a test with mixed cases and for 200 yard shooting I can still hit clays every time.
Only 2 cases stood out as wild and one was A-USA and I can't remember the other one maybe GFL
Those did not have much case volume.
Federals and LC 14-13-17-12 all shoot exactly the same and I will mix those.

I think the biggest issues with mixing cases is capacity/pressure related. With the little. 223 at 1 - 200 yards, you're looking at about a half inch of vertical dispersion with a 100 FPS ES (2900 vs. 3000 FPS). At 300, it is just a touch over an inch. Where you'll really notice a difference is at 500+.

Case capacities in the little .223 can vary by almost a grain of H2O though last time I looked. That is significant if one is trying to load near max while keeping from damaging brass, blowing primers, and generally trying to prevent from adding new disfiguring marks to his or her face....But can be prevented by staying well under max published charge weights.

Have I shot mixed brass .223 safely? Absolutely. Are you going to catch me reloading mixed brass loads? Nope, but I'm not going to chastise those who do.

******

Keeping in the spirit of the thread, I prepped another 50 rounds of Hornady 6.8 SPC brass.
