There's a house on my route that caught fire right off Melrose and Rockwell.. FD is one block north. They sat and watched it burn simply because there wasn't enough water pressure from the hydrants in the area. Hope the city fixed that.

Seriously? Rewarding someone for freeloading is honorable?
Heres a scenario. They put this guys fire out, even though he refused to pay the subscription, because its honorable. The neighbors see this, and think to themselves, "Hey, he didnt pay, and they put his fire out, why are we paying?" So, they stop. Everything rock and rolls for a while, they put some fires out, they send out bills to those who arent members, which winds up being everyone, since they are going to put the fire out anyway. insurance pays on most. On many, however, there is no insurance, because hey, why pay that either? They go to court, file some liens. The only problem with that, the lien is on a lot with a burnt house on it. Hard to get your value back on that.
What happens? The department creases to exist due to lack of funding. Then, when a house burns, and someone is stuck inside, NO ONE gets help, because there was no money. How honorable is it now?
Another scenario for you. What happens if they decide to put the mooch's fire out, and they blow the pump on their engine up? Then, the fire gets out of control, and the neighbor's, who has paid his dues, house catches fire. Now, there is nothing that can be done for a subscription member.

Come on, people. What kind of douche bag just sits by and let's a neighbor's house burn? Hell, I'm not a FF any more but I would grab a hose to help out my neighbor, even if I had to wrestle it away from the damn FFs that stood by and did nothing.
I agree the man should have paid his money. He's an idiot for nor doing so, but common decency still has to play a role in this some where, doesn't it? Is it always a "you get what you deserve' mentality?

I could think up some scenario's but I won't!
They responded to save life. They did their job. Where does the line get drawn? Should they run to the next county, because they dont have a fire department? What about two counties over?
This was a municipal department that offered a service to those outside of their service area at a very low cost. They had no responsibility to act, yet they still responded to safeguard life.
It amazes me that the majority of this board bitches and moans about welfare, food stamps, and Obama Care, but get all riled up when this happens. Its the exact same thing. Nothing is free, nor should it be. These folks have every right to form their own community volunteer fire department, yet many choose to utilize the services offered. Those who dont, expect a free lunch anyway.
My guess is that if he was too cheap to pay $6.25 a MONTH for fire protection, he probably wouldn't shell out the money for insurance, either.
