I carried illegaly for may years before the law came about figuring I'd fight in court before accepting being dead.
My wife is an accountant, and wants to monitor every penny that goes out, and didn't think the price was good as "we had never had an incident"
We were walking around the OKC Botanical gardens one Sunday, and went down the stairs of the reflecting pool to take a walk.
After going down the stairs, and walking half way around, I noticed one guy in front and another behind us. We turned around and went back the way we came.
Told the wife that no matter what happened, to take off running and don't look back.
As we got closer to the guy where we came down the stairs, I took on some attitude, looking him right in the eye, and unzipped my jacket to put my hand inside.
He lost eye contact with me, and turned to walk away. We kept up our pace and got the hell out of there.
Shortly afterward, the question of the CCW came up again and there was no argument.
its sad it had to go that far. It could have gone much worse.

I bought my first pistol and then applied for my CCW (in another state) in 2002. The terrorist attacks on 9/11 were what initially got me to thinking about being more prepared for a "SHTF" situation. I got a lot more serious about it when I started working at an overnight medical facility with an on-site pharmacy. It has evolved to the point that carrying is just part of what I do every day, like putting on pants and brushing my teeth.

Dad was a cop, and though he isn't the gunaholic that that people percieve cops to be, he still trained me to use a gun and the safety and maintenance that goes into owning one.
With that in mind, carrying a gun to me was no different than driving a car. Its something everyone should know how to operate and use but far less elect to use this right. As soon as I turned 21, I got my CCW and though my dad passed his G17 to me, I invested in a G26 for my CCW.
Only two times have I ever had to use it (never shot it in either instance) but it was good that I had it.
First, I worked at a pharmacy forever as a Tech and got off work at usual time around 10, but had to stick around late to clean up and all so was out the door at 10:30. Only people left were my pharmacist, myself, and the manager. Manager and pharmacist were chatting and so I let myself out and was walking to the employee parking area (poorly lit) and my "something wrong" sense went off. I hurry to my truck and in the corner of my eyes I see someone approaching. I open the seat safe and pull my gun out and turn around, concealing it next to me. Guy walks up and orders me to hand my keys over and I won't get hurt. I pull my keys out and drop them on the ground, and back up to a range of 5 yards and pull my gun and order him to the ground. He turns and bolts off into an apartment complex behind the store. I call police, but I didn't have a good description and nothing came of it.
Second time I was watching my sisters house and so I went over to check on it, get the mail, etc. I get there and theres an odd beat up hard body truck in the driveway and her kitchen lights are on. I open the garage, gun in hand, and clear the house. I give her a shout and she says the trucks a friends truck and they're leaving it there over night so they can use their garage for a project. I later found out my dad dropped by and left the kitchen light on.
anyways, my bottom line is I'd rather have it and not need it than vice-a-versa.

The incident with the Pharmacy happened at Hefner and Rockwell which should be self explanatory.
Like I said, I am fortunate about the one time it was truly needed.
