Without exception, those people that I know that are ****** tippers never waited tables. I'm certainly not saying everyone that never waited tables is a ****** tipper, because I know quite a few people that never worked in food service that are good tippers.
I waited tables, so did my wife. I tip pretty well. If you can afford to eat in a fancy restaurant with a $200 tab, you can afford to leave 40 bucks as a tip. If you are eating in a cheap restaurant you should probably be able to afford a few extra bucks for a tip that exceeds 20% on a really small bill. ($5-$7). If you can't, then eat at a fast food place. Which brings me to the car hops at Sonic and other drive in's. No, I don't tip at McDonald's, Whataburger, Taco Bell, et al, or in drive thru's, but if you can't afford a couple extra bucks for the kid that brings you your food at Sonic, then you can't afford a $10 bag of hamburgers. Also, a small tip (10% maybe) for the guy at the bar that gets your to-go order ready at Chili's, On The Border, etc is really appreciated, because getting that order completed and ready for you to take home isn't as simple as you might think.
There are very few people in this world that I find more boorish than a ****** tipper, except one that then bitches about it or tries to justify his boorish behavior publicly. What a complete douche.
Saying that to say this, I also don't like snotty waiters thinking they deserve a 20% tip just because they clocked in. I told a waiter in a really fancy restaurant that he should worry about servicing our table and not worry about what I did with my money when he took exception to me walking over to the bar and tipping the bartender for a really well made round of drinks. Yeah, he brought 'em, and he's still gonna get his 20%+ tip, but if I want to give something extra to the bartender, just for himself, then that is damn well, by God within my rights to do so. It's my money, I'll dip it in gasoline and light it on fire if I want to. Your ass isn't going to tell me how I spend it because you think you should be getting it and not someone else.

That's all that needs to be said. If you don't like tipping a waiter, then eat at home. You're already paying stupid prices for food and drinks. It's a luxury, not a necessity and they don't owe it to you. Might as well go into a designer clothing store store and say "wal-mart is cheaper!" to the salesman. Nobody is forcing you to eat there. You can eat fast food or start cooking.
OP said "I make $15 an hour and don't get tipped no matter how hard I bust my ass". That's the goofiest rationalization ever. I grew up surrounded by licensed tradesmen, and they get the same attitudes from some customers regarding hourly rates. It's like people are offended anytime a blue-collar person makes what they deem to be an unreasonable wage.
