I am needing to upgrade my current AT&T DSL to something faster and am trying to figure out whether to upgrade to a faster Dsl or get Cox High speed cable internet. I think the ATT is cheaper but I am not sure if I have to buy a new modem or anything. I am still trying to crawl out of 1990's tech knowledge. The only thing I do know is ATT customer service sucks.
Any suggestions or experiences?

If you need a new modem, AT&T should provide it. As far as pricing, I don't know who's better; I've looked, but Cox doesn't offer service where I live.

I am already leaning towards cox because it took 9 days for ATT to fix their broken line. It's sick how you never realize how dependent you are on the internet until it goes down.

Cox has done very well since I started using it. ATT's dsl2 offerings or u-verse are nice, thats the one where you can get cable along with internet but the area's of availability are much smaller and the likelihood you will be able to receive the maximum speed is not very likely the farther you are from the CO or RT. Cox has a little bit better time with distribution as the do not have the same line limits. . . generally they have an amp if the signals start to get low and can push it much farther.

Down to brass tacks you can get decent service from each but ATT will not see much for upgrades. What they have is what they have and have had for five years. Cox generally goes through an upgrade every couple years and continue to offer increases in speed. . . Right now some markets are seeing downloads around 185mbps the max I have ever heard of for ATT is 35 or 40. The advantage for ATT is that your line is dedicated to the CO where all the services pool and then go to the net, Cox pools at the node which could be one block or 20 blocks of surrounding area so and if the maximum download on the node is 300mbps and fifty people have the maximum speed and the kiddies are downloading junk you will be more apt to see speed decreases during peak hours. With that said you will generally get faster speed than you pay for in off peak hours. I have the Premier tier of service which is rated at 25mbps down and 3 up and regularly get closer to 32mbps down and 9 up all while having 4 computers online a cellphone and two tablets along with an old droid phone connected as a google voice only phone and my mother in law using magic jack on her computer.

But if you want the opinion of lots of users http://www.dslreports.com/ might be the place to go check out.
