All you can do, and it's also highly recommended, is call the local PD with the serial number and gun type. They'll happily run it for you.

Tell the person you are buying from you have to call in the the serial number to the PD to verify it's good to go before you buy and if they back out you probably just saved yourself a lot of heartache.

The easiest way is to record the number and when you see an officer, ask in person and see if they will run it for you. If it comes back with a hit, they will naturally want to know where it is and who has it, so be prepared for that. If you have it in your possession, they will want to take custody of it.

you have to do it in person and they confiscate the gun on the spot if reported stolen.
you also have to watch out displaying or advertising a serial number as unscrupulous people can see the number, report it stolen, then tell they know who has it and get a free gun.
