Typically those that use a Bill of Sale aren't newbs, but instead are experienced gun buyers/sellers and have been burned once (when having of BOS could have helped). I'm not the only one, either.

I've dealt with many experienced gun buyers and have yet to have one require a bill of sale. I'd love to see a poll of how many "experienced" buyers require a BOS when buying/selling in the classifieds. Otherwise, it's screams newb to me.

That's understandable. It's a rare case that it would be useful, or needed...but indeed can happen.

I don't particularly want to buy it if someone is wanting to keep a record of me. If it's something I really want, or it's someone I know and am comfortable with, maybe. But in general, if the ad says "Bill of Sale Required" on a private sale, I pretty much move along. Just my personal preference.

I figure a receipt benefits the buyer more than the seller, to prove they bought it and didn't steal it, so if I sell something I offer a receipt to the buyer if they want it.

I learned a lesson when I was about 15; bought a go kart from a shop, painted it, then one day a couple of detectives showed up at my door saying someone was claiming I stole their kart. I had the bill of sale showing I bought it, case closed.

I guess it wouldn't really bother me if someone asked for a BOS. Every gun I've sold was bought new by me. It would send off an alert in my head though that the person I'm dealing with might not have experience with gun sales (and is trying to be overly cautious). I wouldn't ask for one though.

All I have ever done is take my book of serial numbers and highlight the gun that was sold and write the date next to it, they stay in my book just like that.
