I went to an area meeting evening with a few state legislators. Overall it seems like teachers and superintendents are going to strike, that were a the meeting. The legislators seemed to understand that on April 2 it is going to happen and they did not have an answer about how to prevent the strike. However, they also said that teachers are going to get a raise, it is just a matter of how much, and how to fund it.
Legislatures should cut back on giving themselves raises and think about the people they represent.

How dare you suggest such a thing! Wow, you clearly do not subjugate yourself to your Legislative Masters sufficiently! Turn in your guns! As a mod, I am authorized to accept them, along with your humble apology. You may PM me for instructions on where to deliver them. And the ammo too, buster. We'll have no more of this nonsense...criticizing our legislators...Jeez; the nerve of some people! You're lucky you don't get 30 lashes too!

Just to add a little more background. I got in to education in my early 30's through the alternative certification program. I am now in my 6th year of teaching/coaching. I currently make approximately $5k per year less than I did when I worked in the private sector. I get an extra $1k per year d/t holding a masters degree (MBA). My coaching stipend varies year to year based on what I am coaching, but generally adds around 10% above my salary. My district pays based on the state minimum salary schedule so I receive a raise of approximately $400 per year. FWIW I am not complaining about my pay, just trying to give some insight.

I love what I do, and have no intentions of leaving the profession with or without a raise. My school has great administration and community support.

I'm lucky enough to have a wife who makes good money (this has not always been the case, I made more than her during parts of my career) so financially we are not feeling the strain that many educators and school districts are feeling. That being said, I talk to my athletes about putting the teams needs ahead of their own and feel like this is an opportunity for me to practice what I preach and show leadership to those kids who are always watching what we do, therefore at this time I do plan to participate in the walkout.

It feels like I'm rambling so I'm going to sign off on this post. I'd be happy to answer any questions any of you have.

Here is the problem on this forum, as I see it, when it comes to any subject related to education. A few people are actually discussing the education system, a few people are still upset at their teachers from 20 yeas ago, a few people are upset at their kids' teachers because they have failed as parent, a few are upset because there are some really bad teachers in our profession, but most people just do not care for taxes and government.
When you attempt to answer one persons question, someone else will jump in and try to twist what you said because it does not fit their agenda. The target keeps moving because most of the time you are never actually discussing the education system.
As an example, a couple of weeks ago we were trying to have a real discussion about making schools safe, when one of the main members jumped in with insults about how much teachers get paid, then others piled on.
I am guilty of doing the same thing, when one of the members in this thread just jumped in with "fire them all." I insulted him, then he wanted to have a debate, so I insulted him again because their was no reason to try to have a debate, he made that clear in his first post. by the way, that will get you put in in-house suspension for 24 hours.
Just remember, we all want more members because it adds to the conversation. So, when you respond to one member and others jump in, they may not be having the same discussion you are having because they have a different agenda.

Does anyone have the TPS 2018 budget numbers? What I want to see is a comparative analysis to say about 2000. What I suspect you will see is the budget shift from educating the kids to being a foster parent. What I mean is the school now feeds the kids meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for the weekend. The problem here is there is a finite budget, these meals are moving funds from the teacher's compensation to feeding kids, which the school should not be involved with. Once this is offered, the parents know it and now expect the school to provide for the kids and take the parents place as the provider for the kids. It's also training the kids to rely on the government to provide for them. It's really sad.

The school administrations are now making it appear that teachers are being damaged because they aren't being paid enough, whether that is true or not, I'm not arguing that point. My point is, the administration has made the choice to foster the kids instead of paying the teachers. Now they are running out of money, to make it more consumable by the public, lets argue teacher pay instead of funding the new social program of taking care of these kids 24 hours a day.

That sounds a lot like Thanksgiving dinner at my in-laws.

I agree with this. I don't like taxes, or government. I also put two kids through Yukon schools. I have seen teachers that I thought should get paid way more then they do. I have also seen teachers that make me ask how they still have a job. It's bad when almost all of your kid's teachers can tell you about the one teacher that you just need to try and get your kid out of their class, because they hate teaching and hate kids. These people should be removed, not rewarded. I also think that the schools have the same problem as the state health department and other state agencies. Too many overpaid administrators. Get rid of some of them and give that money to the good teachers.
I am sure there is a lot of things that I don't know about. I love most of the people in Oklahoma. I think Oklahoma has some really good and down to earth people. That said, I hate the state of Oklahoma. We are so far behind the times and Oklahoma as a whole, is an ugly state. I don't blame teachers for wanting to leave Oklahoma and not just because of money. I don't thinking walking out is the answer.
