Over the many years of being in the outdoors and camping there as well, I had NEVER gotten a decent picture of a bear in the wild. On our 2005 Alaskan cruise and land tour, I knew the one chance I might have would be at Denali National Park. But, also aware of my sorry luck, I talked my wife into taking that photo so that I could have "proof" of a "bear encounter."

But, I also lucked out in Denali when a female Grizzly crossed directly in front of our tour bus and started digging into the side of the slope after a ground squirrel.

And, since then, no more good luck.

We have vacationed on Victoria Island BC twice, driving and hiking all over the place. That island is supposed to have the most bears per square mile of anywhere in the world and we saw only one small black bear feeding beside the road eating on berry's. That is my only time to see a bear in the wild as well.

LOL If you are over 30 and wear your hat backwards and you are not a welder, your a dork !! YOMV:cool:
You can add if you wear a flat bill ball cap over 30 you got issues also. I don't trust any man that's over 30 if he wears skinny jeans or a flat bill. You have shown outward signs you don't make good decisions.

With all the former DOD crowd on this site I'm absolutely shocked that the real answer hasn't been shared.

It is absolutely unacceptable to wear your issued cover "hat" indoors... PERIOD!!!

I learned this somewhere around hour two 1988 at MCRD San Diego...

Carry on...

sorry, you are mistaken. you must be covered when armed, and as said previously armed includes a cartridge belt. and covered indoors while "armed" is the rule/tradition. i learned that at MCRD in 1964.

Best hard hat I ever saw was before cellphone cameras probaly 97 or 98 I will never forget. They were redoing the road in front of old Rainbow bakery in Tulsa at 15th and Sheridan. I drove by a guy in Hard hat with a giant piece of a cardboard on it. It was a giant hard hat sombrero I laughed for the next two miles. If I wasn't already late for work I would have bought a disposable camera to get a photo of that guy.

True and had I thoroughly read all the replies I'd have thought about what you'd already said which was 100% correct but the Major was removing his cover going into an Ace Hardware.

1964.. Hard Arse 100% Semper Fi!

Hopefully you'll appreciate this photo of my absolute most prized position. My Dad, an Army Drill Sergeant 1966-69 gave it to me. Ignore the 82nd Airborne bag, he gave me that too. : ) One of my best friends was 82nd Airborne so it has special meaning to me and I keep the bag as is.

Obviously I still need to get a flash suppressor with a bayonet lug. Hooking and a jabbing....

In the 'back country' of Sequoia National Park in California, there's a campground called Atwell Mills. Towards the end of September in 2004, I witnessed a sleuth of 8 to 10 bears passing through. This was the first time I ever saw a group of bears other than a mama and her cubs. Was kinda eerie because I had been reading Stephen King's The Dream Catcher the night before. Over the years that I frequented that area, I probably saw 3 dozen bears --- would be the place I'd wanna go if I wanted to view some bears!

A little closer to home, there's a few bears along the Talimena Drive. I saw a couple last year.

Best of luck in your 'Bear Search'!

(BTW, I was wearing a hat during all of these encounters.)

I do occasionally put my hat on backwards when I'm getting ready to leave in the morning, but I turn it around when I go outdoors because I'm a by-God Redneck, and I need the sun to keep it that way.

I have also been known to wear my ballcap backwards in the truck because the bill hits the roof or visor, or it hits the glass when I lean over to check something in the outside mirror. But then it hits the headrest, so I turn it around, then it hits something up front or to the side, and I take it off and throw it on the dash.

Maybe we need to start a "bear" thread? I've seen a lot of bears in the wild, particularly up around Purgatoire River Campground and Bear and Blue Lake Campgrounds in Colorado. I've just never had good luck in getting pictures of them. They are very camera shy.

On one vacation, we had been warned that a bear was raiding campgrounds at night, so one night, I sat up all night in the vehicle with my camera, hoping to get him. Never did, even with a slice of bread on the picnic table. Couple of evenings later, I walked down to the outhouse that was back in some trees. As I neared the grove trees and brush to go back there, a huge cavernous mouth with hot breath was right in my face. However, it was a big dog belonging to one of our camping neighbors.

The lady that was in there asked me if the dog had scared me when it barked. I replied, "Well, I don't think I need to go to the bathroom any more."

What was bad was that when they first arrived, I was the one that walked down and warned them about the bears, so I knew they had a couple of big dogs.
