if you use grass clippings for mulch is a good way to introduce unwanted Bermuda grass to your garden.
I have always heard this but i have a pile of grass clipping that is in a washout to keep it from eroding any more and after 3 years still have no bermuda grass coming up only crabgrass on a occasion. It really depends on what kind of clippings you use mine has a wide variety of different grasses in it including bermuda.

Guys I am just thinking ahead, just in case. Hopefully I will not need to plant that big of an area but if I should have to I like my ducks in a row.

When SHTF seems like a poor time to start building a garden. You could start preparing now and spread the work out over time, keep expenses and physical labor down. Some cardboard weighted down over the area you’d ideally like to plant, will give you a head start on killing any turf. You could build up and improve the soil as well. My friend tells everybody that plans to garden that it’s all in the soil.

Spare of the moment gardening isnt ideal or very productive it takes planning and alot of prep work before the planting season arrives to have a good successive garden. Sure anyone can go out and work up some ground and throw seeds down and get some of it to come up but you need to be able to control all the unwanted vegetation that will use up all the moisture and nutrients that your crop will need. I see this happen alot and then people complain they didnt get what they was expecting from their garden and when you look at it cant tell the difference from their overgrown lawn and their garden. Worked with a guy like this would spend hours preping the ground and then plant and walk away from it til harvest time and couldnt find what he had planted.

Just out of curiosity, anyone in the Edmond area do roto tilling if the SHTF? If things start getting any worse we might need to expand past container gardening but do not have a tiller.
What can one even plant now and realistically expect to harvest before winter to make the opportunity costs worth it? Seems like prepping and planning for next year would be a better idea.

Actually, there are plenty of things like tomatoes, peppers, etc… that can be planted now and harvested in Sept through the fall.
I’ve only planted peppers in the spring, they did produce through the end of December. the cross pollination got rather interesting as I intentionally planted 5 different kinds right next to each other.

This is my first year having a garden and I really like using used cattle mineral tubs. Drill some holes in the bottom and good to go.

Other than that I used an old 170gallon oval stock tank that the bottom was rotten out of. Perfect raised bed. I recently got another small round stock tank, probably close to a 400 gallon that I am Gonna start prepping for next year.

Just a thought though, RickN. If you do roto till a garden are you in good enough health to weed the garden? Seems to me like traditional gardening is a lot more work than container/raised bed gardening.
