Do you carry one? How do you feel about them? How do you reload them and what ammo do you use?

Is it an EDC or backup?

Need pics for person purposes

I carry a sw 442 with gold dot +p .38 HP.

I need to decide what ammo carrier I'll be using.

I flip and flop between a Smith 637 and 640. Depends on the weather. 38+p in warmer months, 357 this time of year. I really like speed strips, but usually carry in a matched galco owb cc rig. Nothing fancy, just brown leather. LCP in a pocket during active days.

A model 36 and a speed strip most of the time for me. I know...low capacity, slow reloads, all that. I suppose if I ever get into a gang war or a shootout with a bunch of bad guys I'll probably regret it, but I'd probably regret it no matter what I was carrying. They're handy to drop in a pocket when you can't wear a holster and they shoot pretty good with a little practice. I don't have any pics, but it looks like a square butt snubby with TONS of character and not much finish.

Gold Dot +P Short Barrel is about as good as it gets. Speed strips conceal moebetta than speedloaders.

I read a test one time where they compared the regular loads to the "short barrel" revolver loads that were supposed to have a faster burning powder (I think?) to help them get up to speed quicker in 2" or so snubby barrels - end result was essentially no difference between the regular personal defense ammo and that specified as "short barrel". Not sure if there is a price premium on that stuff over the regular personal defense ammo or not.

I haven't chrono'd each load to compare, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. I have chrono'd the GD short barrel out of my 442 when I had it. It was within 2 FPS of the factory stated velocity which surprised me.

I've also chrono'd a screaming handload out of my 2.5" .357 magnum snubbie and the idea that a magnum round of a snubbie isn't any better than .38 is pure unadulterated hogwash. That load was with a vastly slower powder (actually a fast rifle powder) and it was pushing 1300 FPS. It wasn't a max load either, as a matter of fact is was a starting load straight from the Vhit manual. I don't really care to push that particular gun any harder since it's a pre-lock, pre-MIM model.

I go between a Ruger LCR 9mm with 124gr Critical Defense and S&W 638 .38 Spl with 110g Critical Defense (changing to Fed 130gr Micro +P very soon). Just got Speed Strips today for the S&W. Ruger takes moon clips, which in my opinion are the best option for reloads.

Ruger is a bit larger, fits perfectly in my coat pocket. S&W slides in front pants pocket very easily. 6D39A636-5D7D-4D2C-846E-1B30C59F5E3B.jpeg

I frequently carry a 642 with Hornady critical defense loads. Use speed strips as well. It’s cut for moon clips but the speed strips carry easier.
