My 5 year old Pit has been limping alot so we took her to the vet and found out that she has a torn ACL. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and any advice.

is it a back leg knee?? cruciate(sp?) ligament?

We just had the TPLO surgery done on our chocolate lab at woodland west in tulsa. They also do the same surgery at OSU in stillwater for the same price. There are two ways to fix the problem 1 way is and older style way that uses rubberbands and other items dont know much about as we opted for the tplo. old way is about $1200.00. We decided to do the TPLO surgery where they cut his leg in half and re-adjust the bones at the knee joint and repair the Cruciate ligament. They readjust the bones and install a plate to hold them together. The healing process is very tedious it takes anywhere from 10 -16 weeks for it to heal. Our lab took 10 weeks. You have to keep them confined to a kennel or a closet and keep them on a leash. Its not the funnest 10 weeks. Now the part where you need to be sitting down it cost us around $3200.00 and theres a GREAT chance that the other knee will fail too. I wish i would have got health insurance for him when he was a pup. couldnt get it once he had the problem of course. Woodland west takes CARE CREDIT which is like a visa for health care bills and such. Smaller dogs are probably alittle cheaper.

here he is the day i brought him home.

If you catch it early it may not be completely torn. the only way to find out it to have a surgery done, they cannot tell by x-rays or feel. if its the same thing i can answer most of your questions he just got released from the doctor to play again about 2 weeks ago.

here he is 11.5 weeks after which was this morning..

Not sure about dogs, but the rehab on a human is horrendous and is a big part of determining how well the graft does in the longrun. Not sure how you'd encourage proper rehab in a dog.

The pain will go away eventually, as long as he's not planting his feet to make cuts avoiding linebackers, he'd probably be fine in the longrun.

If you love your dog, get the surgery. Our English Mastiff had two ACL surgeries about 7 or 8 years ago. He is 12 now, which is ancient for a Mastiff. He has severe arthritis in those knees, but he's had many good post surgery years with us.

It's her back leg and our vet is going to take muscle and use it to construct a ligament held with titanium wire. He sounds pretty sure and he's been around for a long time. p.s. Thanks for the response guys.

I would say that you NEED to go to a specialist. Not just a neighborhood vet. You'll be sorry you didn't head to a specialist whether that vet has been around a long time or not. The better question is how many ACL surgeries have you performed?

You need a veterinary surgeon, not just a veterinarian.

I personally would go with the TPLO but its expensive. Dr. Richer at woodland west has done hundreds of them. He steered us away from the wire up older way of fixing the cruciate ligament. I think the consult at woodland west is free, they did a great job!! the recovery process is long and not fun but worth it for my little buddy..
