I have never understood why alcohol was a thing on planes in the first place, but I'm also not much of a drinker myself. Consider the circumstances: narrow tube 30k feet off the ground, no room to walk around, limited bathrooms.

I get that it is a way for the airlines to make money, but frankly they'd profit greater if they just charged for selling sodas.

Are people so substance-dependent that not being able to drink during a 2 hour flight is a major a problem?
I think alcohol on flights started when commercial flying started. It was a great social experience with folks dressing up in their Sunday go to meeting clothes and enjoying a cocktail on the flight that endured into the 70's.
Typically on short flights, a can of tomato juice or water is all I get, but on the long overseas flights, a cocktail or two helps put me to sleep. Usually a couple of hours into international flights, some idiot that was toasted before getting on the plane gets rowdy and the bar gets closed anyway.

I think you're right on that. From what I've seen and read, a lot of the "hospitality" stuff is left over from the early days of air travel, when it was an "experience" to travel by airliner, and a posh one, at that. I'm not sure, but I think a lot of it happened because airlines had serious competition in passenger rail service and ocean liners, and a meal, drinks, and service are things that passenger rail and ocean liner patrons of the time (at least, patrons of a certain status) would expect.

I think I've flown maybe 3 or 4 times since I got back from serving overseas back in 1968. Maybe two of those times were flights to Dallas/Ft. Worth area as a manager for manager's meetings back in the early '90's. The other two times were around 2017 flying to Colorado Springs and then back to Oregon.

Never really cared for flying. One can't see the scenery at 30,000 feet.

Oh yeah, one can look at the old photos of flight where champagne was the drink of choice and people were in formal wear.
As recent as the 70's international flights with 747's had piano bars in the upper chamber for 1st class with real piano's. Full bar to endure the long trip.
Got to fly one one of them once. Quite the trip.

Planes became buses.

People with zero couth don't magically get it when they reach altitude.

I've flown more than most, and not as much as some. It is what it is.

This here. Greyhound of the skies. I still say flying is too inexpensive and the price needs to be raised substantially. People are flying now who have little business doing it. The are so many entitled persons flying right now, and it makes it downright not fun.

Pretty sure that will only increase the issue. I have the best luck with first time flyers and biz travelers. The old rich women flying a couple times a year, yuck. Heck, I like traveling with families with lap babies more. I have shows saved on my iPad for that.

On our company offsite in San Diego, the woman who decided she got to sit in my isle seat in biz class instead of in her seat in coach. Her daughter was even pleading with her to move. She wouldn’t and said it was fine. So I called the flight attendant. She wouldn’t answer a single question from any of us as to why she was sitting there. She refused to move and refused to answer. She was escorted off the plane.

I had to fly last june next to a demanding old racest white woman in first class. After hearing her complain about “those people” in first class, then about Jews, and demanding being waited on (pretty much no service due to trying to figure out COVID), and not getting the hint as I had headphones in the whole time. She finally asked what I thought about flying with “those people”. I winked at the flight attendant and the other lady she was talking about, and dead panned “I get it, my Gulfstream is being overhauled. I’m in no class stuck next to you.” She did shut up after finally getting it after everyone else started laughing.

Closest I’ve ever come to owning a g6 was test driving a Pontiac, certainly the Gulfstream G650 wasn’t an option.

i find the airport behavior to be worse than the planes. So looking forward to not flying much.
