American (and the world for that matter) has always dramatized and romanced criminals who weren't blood-thirsty or violent towards their victims.
John Dillinger was one such person - he always took "the bank's money" and not the individuals that were at the bank. He has always been portrayed in movies as a super-nice "great guy".
Several of the old-west's career criminals were the same way. This kid is just a throw-back to those eras.
I personally don't agree with what he does - if he was in my house stealing, it would not be cool. But to be perfectly honest - at a time when our politicians, and financial giants on Wall street are stealing amounts much greater from the American people (including but not just limited to our current President)...
I don't honestly see how this kid is America's #1 criminal.
