So I got a scope and watched a video that midway uses and Mr. Potterfield had about 300 bucks worth of equipment. He uses a vice , tools for lapping. Some calibration tools. And a couple other things, anyone else go through all this? I just can't see it happening. What's your process?

Never lapped any rings. Do have a gun vise though that sure helps.
My method is to mount the scope loosely in the rings, use a level on the gun to make sure it's level with another level on the top turret of the scope. When both show level, start tightening the ring screws in a cross pattern until all are snug, then use a torque screwdriver to finish tightening. You don't want to over tighten.

If they're turn in rings like the Leupold ring/base sets for bolt rifles, I use a section of 1" steel bar stock to turn them in and ensure alignment. I do the same for other set types by loosely setting everything in place with the bar stock and tightening the rings on the bar stock, then the bases so they're perfectly square. Then I pull the top halves and set the scope in the rings, where everything should set in nicely. If the rings have pinch points that will dent the tube, I return them and get something else.

Life's too short to put up with ****** scope rings.

+1, I use a wheeler lapping kit and the better wheeler leveling kit. plus, I use a Warne torque wrench.
I am not sure lapping is needed, but if I am a grand into scope, rings, and base and a grand or more into a rifle, I lap my rings.

I don't lap quality rings like Warne or other higher grade stuff. Lower grade, it makes a big difference and keeps them from marring your scope, should you ever unmount it.
