Either one is much stronger than Black rifle disease. (in fact it will cause black rifle disease to go into remission)

I've had a bit of the opposite. I've been a Garandholic for many years and was never interested in the EBR.

Now that the Obama craze has settled a bit and many EBRs are showing up for some somewhat reasonable prices, I'm thinking of trying one out.

Wherever you end up buying from, compare the asking price to whatever CMP is asking before you buy.

Lots of folks out there are selling rifles that aren't any better than CMP Rack Grade...but charging Service Grade or higher prices.

Buy the gun not the story...Joe-blow's grandpa didn't bring it back in a duffel bag after killing a dozen Nazis with it.

My ex dad in law has a CMP Garand he wants to sell. It's a Springfield but I don't know a great deal about it. Ya'll think I should buy it? He really doesn't know what it is worth but I was thinking around $700. What do you guys think? It's in nice shape.

Go to odcmp.com, read about the various rifle grades and see what they are currently charging for those grades and compare to your ex's.

Springfield Service Grades (IMHO, most Garands on the market are below Service Grade), are currently selling for $595.

What SMS said. Also, I'd suggest checking the muzzle wear with an erosion gauge if you have one or can borrow one. If not, there's a very general method to assess muzzle wear. Get a M2 Ball round and insert it point-first into the muzzle, but don't force it - just set the rifle upright (unloaded, of course ;) ) and lightly place the round into the muzzle. See how much of the bullet is visible between the muzzle and the neck of the case. A lightly-worn muzzle should leave roughly 1/4" of the bullet showing. Likely you'll still be able to see around 1/8" or so of the bullet. If the round drops into the muzzle all the way to the case neck, steer clear of that M1.

If it's a stripped receiver why not, replace the barrel, and make it a shooter?

It's a complete M1 he's thinking of buying, it's his first M1, and he doesn't know much about them. Better to start off with a shooter ready to go, and learn about M1's from there, IMHO :)

Eh, good point... I'm to the point of assembling one myself in the near future. Last time I was at CMP South (this past Oct) they had pretty good deals on stripped barreled receivers, but the barrels were shot and needed to be replaced. If had extra cash on me I would've walked away with low # SA, it was in the 70K if I remember right. Still could slightly see the two tone finish. The temptation I had that day to rack it all up on the Discover card. Go figure I pick the weekend before the GCA had their convention, so they had all the culls out of the rack. Still impressive.

Already have one too many Safe queen M1's that'll either, be sold to put my kiddo thru college someday if they hold their value or be one heck of a gift to him.

I've stayed away from the South store for that very reason...afraid of the damage I'd do to my credit card.

On that note, I saw a note from the CMP that we will soon be able to order rifles directly off their "E-store" online...and follow up with the hard copy paper work within a certain amount of time after that to seal the deal. That is bad news for me...being able to effectively order a Garand or carbine with a click of the mouse....yikes.
