I've been broken into and had all my guns stolen, and on another occasion had some tools stolen.

I think it's all pretty tongue-in-cheek... that being said, I support much MUCH harsher penalties for thievery. This kid (if it is him) was just an attempted ********* thief, as far as we know. I think a good public caning with being locked in the stocks for a few days would suffice.

They couldn't really do anything except trespassing correct? He didn't steal anything. However, I hope you get the perp.
