Just keep a couple boxes in each caliber than pick one rifle and pistol caliber for your main cache of ammo. This is what I do and I chose 223 and 9mm because that what I use in 3gun matches.

I promise you this. Any ammo you purchase now will not get any cheaper later on...

That's my mindset; I'm not buying for any election or SHTF scenario, I'm buying all I can because five years from now, I'll finally get to be one of the guys that get on the ammo price bitching threads, and say "I bought a ton several years ago....I'm good".

As for the consolidated calibers, I tried the paring down the caliber thing a few years ago. And like some of the others here, it didn't last. Forgive me for I am weak.

I do this. May or may not be the best thing to do, but it works for me. Of the multiple firearms I own, there's only 4 calibers shared between them. .22lr, .45 ACP, .308/7.62x51, and 12 gauge.

Not to say that there aren't better calibers for certain situations, but those 4 cover me for most situations I might ever find myself in. I do plan on expanding my horizons into different rifle and handgun calibers, like .223 and 9 MM, as $15 per mag to shoot my .308 takes a bit of the enjoyment out of the experience.
