You are so right. I watched my brother die of lung cancer at the age of 54. I had quit more than four years prior. He had actually quit several years earlier, and just decided he wanted to go back to smoking!!! He quit again just before he was diagnosed, and died a year later ... on my birthday.

Pretty similar with my dad, quit smoking at age 50, lung cancer at 54 and "beat" it. Diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 55, didn't beat it, and died on his birthday.

I quit August of 2013. I had smoked since 1968 and was smoking 3 packs a day for many years. Tossed the last pack on the counter and the wife threw them away about a year later. Since quitting I had my chest Xrayed 2 years ago, the DR came back and said "your lungs look awesome!" Earlier this year my cardiologist told my wife "I can't believe your husband ever smoked cigarettes."

On sad note, about 10 years ago a good friend passed away from lung cancer. He only smoked cigarettes for 6 years, he was 31 when he passed. A person genes has a lot to do with everything about your health.

My Grandfather and step-grandpa both smoked and drank heavily and worked at the smelters in Bville, both lived to their 80's and only had hea;lth problems the last year of their lives. My Grandfather on my dad's side never drank nor smoked, he passed away at 72 and the DR's said he had advanced lung cancer.

Kudos to all that quit, it's brutal to watch someone die from cancer, slowly, from smoking. Your family will appreciate it down the road.

Lost my mom and dad to lung cancer with my sister on full oxygen now. My ex MIL and FIL died of lung cancer as well. All heavy smokers.
When my grandson slipped out on Christmas Eve to smoke, I went out and privately ripped his ass.
I doubt it made any difference.

I dipped for 14 years. Really thought it would be tougher than it was because of HOW I dipped. I put a small pinch in at 730 am and refreshed it every few hours until 1030 at night. Kinda like an IV drip. I stopped on my 40th bday, that was 12 years ago.
It was harder getting off jolly ranchers and ice breaker mints!

Good job, guys! I watched my grandpa die of lung cancer back in the 70s when the "cure" was worse than the disease. Made a real impression on me, though years later when I was a bartender for a couple years the second hand smoke was so bad I had that smoker's hack. I often wonder just how many packs of smokes that 6 nights work a week equaled. Hopefully I'll never have the chance to ask a cancer specialist about it.
