I was at the zoo this past Saturday and there was a cottonmouth hanging out in between the walkway and the pond. Looked about the same size as the one in the picture. It's only the second one I've ever seen. The first one was along the Meremec River in Missouri and I'd swear it chased us. Mean little bastards.

Actually a juvenile cottonmouth. Copperheads and cottonmouths are very similar when young. As cottonmouths get older they lose most of the chevron pattern.

Is the "cottonmouth",(white inside the mouth) also an age/maturity thing?

I love snakes too, they're good rodent control. But some snakes are not a good fit with human habitation, and the cottonmouth fits that description to a T.
