Yeah, but you're comparing two very different materials with very different properties. If you take that string and impregnate it with resin and cure it under pressure, it'll not just stand up, it'll support a good deal of weight. And if you weave it into a fabric, build up layers of that fabric, impregnate it with resin, and cure it under pressure and in heat, it will hold up fantastic amounts of weight.
