Not the only way but if that is my daughter, he has about 5 seconds to let her go at my demand before he takes a dirt nap. Sorry, not gambling with my child's life.

No gambling when it comes to my kids or wife. I'm going for the win at any cost. I don't have ninja skills to take on a guy with a knife, thats why a carry a gun to protect myself and family. Hell my wife would prob take the guy out before me, you don't mess the babies.

I could not agree more. If the first and only way you can think of to resolve this situation is a gun you should rethink a few things.

Are you a parent?

If someone is attempting to kidnap or otherwise take my daughter hostage, that is a real and direct threat to her life and I will respond as such. Survival rates for anyone taken to a secondary crime scene aren't very good.

I've seen to many brains splattered everywhere in real life...I'm glad they didn't release that kind of video footage.

That police captain did the right thing, he definitely saved that child's life. You have to wonder though, what would have happened if this guy had started his countdown before the police arrived.

I hope the little girl didnt see that, that kind of stuff is burned into your mind forever and could cause problems for some. My wife found my uncle after he blew his brains out.

She was 3 inches from his head when it exploded, I'm sure she seen it. I doubt she will remember what happened later in life, unfortunately, the Internet lives on and so will the video.

I could only imagine the fear the mother and sister felt when they heard that shot not knowing how it went down.

I don't agree. If a guy has a knife to my kids neck, my gun will be out. Why do we carry if we are not going to protect the life of family. I'm not looking for a fair fight with a guy with a knife, I'm going to save my kid at any cost.

You're missing my point. If you don't have a gun with you, you can still intervene to protect those you are trying save.

Most of us carry all the time, so being without one isn't much of a concern. And even if we were somehow caught in this situation unarmed, what would you suggest we do to resolve the issue of a madman holding a knife to a toddler?

Somehow I doubt "pretty please, with a cherry on top" would do very much. Rushing the guy probably wouldn't work out well at all. Cooperating (just as the mother and police did) sure didn't help the situation.

Really? Being a Commander and all I'd have thought you'd be more resourceful. There are always other options. Used quite effectively as well. Not all of us carry a firearm all the time. Sometimes it isn't practical or permitted.
