During a carry weapon break in, I don't clean it at all until I am satisfied it's ready for leather. I run the nastiest crap I can find, run it hot as hell then run my carry ammo.
Afterwards, I deep clean following every range session. I feel better knowing it's cleaned and lubed if needed. Whether or not they get fired, every year on my birthday, MRDS and light batteries are swapped, re-zeroed and deep cleaned.
Another thread inspired me to ask this question because the OP was asking for help finding someone to replace some parts on their handgun. I’ve heard several people talk about having malfunctions after cleaning or replacing parts on their carry firearm and didn’t discover this issue until after the next trip to the range. Because this has happened to them, they only clean their gun prior to a trip to the range. The logic being that a typical range session doesn’t dirty the gun up enough to warrant a full detail cleaning afterward.
Just depends on which ones. Semi-auto pistol's I will clean and lube after each use (keep them ready to go). I keep a titanium 38spl in my ctr console it might get cleaned once a year (not much to go wrong with it). AR's every 2nd or 3rd trip to the range (can put a lot of rounds through one with no issues). Bolt action precision rifles before every use (a dirty rifle can affect accuracy). Might include I go shoot a couple of times a month. Nothing sits very long without use.
