Guys,

After 2 recent car break-ins I have decided I want to add a couple of security cameras and motion detector floodlights on the exterior of my home. I'd probably do all the installs myself just to save $$$. However, I don't know where to even start with purchasing this stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonable priced set-ups? I'd need 3 cameras and probably 2-3 motion detector floodlights. If possible, I'd like to use my laptop to record as opposed to buying a recorder. As may be evident with my post, I know very little about this subject. Any advice is always appreciated. Kindest regards,

Jonny

Talk to Bulbboy about lighting, he can get some really good stuff, I've converted all of my outside lighting to LED.

Lots of options for cameras and recording. Cheap cameras aren't the right way to go. I had to replace my home NAS recently, the unit I purchased(Synology Disk Station) can function as a video repository as well.

I bought this system off of Woot several months ago for $100 with no hard drive. A 2TB hard drive cost me $70. 1 afternoon to install the 4 cameras. I've seen this on amazon for $150 or so.

Daytime video is just fine. The IR at night is so-so, it only illuminates out to about 30 feet or so, but it sounds like with your flood lights this won't be an issue. I figure I can upgrade the cameras one at a time if needed, and keep the DVR. I can view who's at the door now from any PC/tablet in the house.

You will not be happy with a cheap camera. You will only be able to see that someone broke into your car, but not who that person was, or what they looked like. I would be more than happy to help you in any way that I can, but the systems I sell and install are not cheap.
I will also recomend bulbboy for your lighting needs. He has helped me out with several projects.

Can you expound on what defines a 'cheap camera'? (other than the price)
What technical specifications do you recommend?

I've watched for camera systems also.
In fact my brother bought the same system as dvPete. Is that a 'cheap system'? If so, why?
