Karma is *****. Go do that job for a while and deal with the rude horses' asses and cheap douchebags whose only tiny sintilla of power in their miserable lives is to go to a restaurant and order a server around.

I always tip 20-35% unless the server is completely incompetent. The only way I will tip less than 15% is if they have a bad attitude and then I usually say something to them about it.

I agree here^^
I always try to remember the phrase " Bless and you will be Blessed" It Works!!!!

http://www.wisegeek.com/why-do-we-ti...not-others.htm
"One reason we tip certain service employees such as waiters or bellhops is to help compensate for a gap in wages. Employers are legally permitted to pay less than minimum wage to certain employees who routinely benefit from tipping."
"A waiter may also be responsible for tipping other employees such as bussers and bartenders. Without regular tips, waiters and barmaids may not even earn the legal minimum wage."
http://www.tip20.com/why-should-you-tip/27
"* Hourly wages are typically significantly less in the service industry, because tips are considered part of the servers income.

I don't see how this is pity? Again it's a description of how the industry works. Don't like it? Don't tip. But have the courage to tell your server or anyone before hand, about your philosophy.

those just kind of stuck out on the first two sites that popped up when i did a yahoo search of "why do we tip"
seems like its kind of the big reason. sounds to me like we are not tipping so much because they did their job well, but because their job relies on it.... i am not going to start taking surveys to kindle my opinion.

That's great. Just to let you in on a little hint in life though...... the real world doesn't neccessarily reflect what a yahoo search brings or what the media says. You DO realize that you are on a gun board yes? Do a yahoo search on "assault rifles" and see how much real world info you learn.

I do not expect this to matter to you, you see me as wrong, disagree with me, and unless i bow to your superior intellect, you will just trash me and my words because you are right, and i am wrong; and the further i argue, the more you will be out for blood, and slander me questioning my intellect and upbringing, or insulting my wealth (which you have already taken a stab at).

Now who wants a pity party here? I'm not out for blood, or slinging insults. I'm clarifying ignorance of the industry (something you freely admit) as if I would from several scenarios that I have direct exprience with. Again, I refer to firearms for an example of people forming strong opinions off the media, making assumptions off little to no real world experience. I did not insult your wealth, I said it's of obvious importance to you as you therefore need it more than others. You've brought up what you make and compared it to others and tried to judge how much YOU think they should make due to your philosophy. So your priority is money and wages and like I said.....don't stress out about it or sit there and judge what someone makes, just let someone else pay OR don't go to places that have 2.13/hr employees. Have some courage in your conviction. Don't take this personally, I'd say this to anyone that felt as strongly as you do about what service industry people make.

i would rather it be a reward for enjoying the service someone did for me, than expected because of situation. just like i said.

Great, I agree. I don't believe tipping to be automatic by any means and trust me, pity in Oklahoma doesn't happen on a widescale from my experiences. If you STILL think differently about your pity philosophy, then before you cast judgement and make assumptions, get out from behind a computer and work a few shifts and see how many people treat you like Oliver. Otherwise if your server sucks or is rude, then stiff them, it will work it's way out one way or another. Either the server will get it, or will starve. :thumb:

you have gone to great lengths to out right try and insult me and label me, over some words i typed. sounds to me like you are more the one with a chip on your shoulder. I have said nothing to provoke the hatred and blatant insult you have selected to reply with. and nothing i have said, is something i felt i could not say to my friends and have them understand where i am coming from; regardless if they agreed or not.

I think you are being quite sensitive here. I have yet to insult you personally and I have no idea how you see any hatred in what i've said. Just to clarify, I said you are ignorant of the other side of the business. You freely admit that. I also said that you need to let your friends pay for themselves because of your judgements and that you should have some conviction and head to places that don't have tipped employees. No hate, just a bit of reality from the other side to weed through all the class warfare rhetoric I'm reading here.

I can say this is an argument I had some time ago with GMT and I was actually persuaded to the other side.

The way I look at tips, it is a way for the consumer to decide who is good enough to hack it in the food services industry. If they did a bad job, tip appropriately. If they end up making an average of $4 an hour because of bad tips... they wont be in the business very long, will they? If they do a great job, tip greatly. That keeps those good hard workers in the field they obviously thrive in. We want them there... my stomach wants them there, and my ever-expanding palate wants them there.

Get a real job?

I know at least 15 recent college grads who are working well below the degree they earned right now. All have worn out a lot of shoe leather and printer cartridges looking for work that fits the education they have.

Just about all of these kids are "waiting tables" (cutting lawns, dog walking, etc) trying to make ends meet.

The 99%ers have some valid problems...the media picked some idiots from "Central Casting" so some of you folks could justify your ignorance about the economy *across* the nation.

I cannot wait till illegal aliens have figured out how to run derrick tools and hotshot. You will figure out just how good it WAS then... and be in the same boat with a lot of other folks.

There's a lot of reality in this post. If people want the price of good service baked into the meal..... watch how "cheap" and overpriced the food gets and watch how many people leave the business in lieu of getting paid $7-8 an hour. Who will take their place?
