I canceled my Uverse service on 28 February. My bill for the period ending 2 March was paid. Several days later, I attempted to log on and check my bill status, but my account no longer existed. I assumed this to mean that my bill was settled; how else could I view and pay since I had paperless statements? Since then, the only correspondence I've had from AT&T was a letter begging for me to come back.

Until today, when I got March's bill and a late payment fee.

I am not paying a dime, if anything AT&T should've pro rated the month of February since I canceled early. Instead, they assessed me a late fee for a bill that shouldn't even have existed, and that I had no way of knowing about. I've never been late on any payment for anything, until now. I'm livid, and worried that this will hurt my credit. Advice: Never get Uverse. JB, I understand if you can't comment, but do I have any legal recourse?

I absolutely hate AT&T. I had their cell service several years back and had canceled several months after my contract had expired. I had paid in full, had a copy of the receipt, and an emailed copy showing cancellation with zero balance. A year later they had a "Collection Account" for $20 on my credit report. I was pissed, it took me nearly three years to get it taken off.

First, contact AT&T and have them eliminate the bill and send you a document stating that the account is closed with a zero balance. Second, pull your credit report to ensure the late payment isn't reflected there (you get to pull one free report per year from TransUnion, Experian and Equifax). If it is, file a protest and have the supporting documentation available. This is how you get false negative reports removed from your reports.

I had a similar issue. First with the bill then with the equipment return. Took 6 months before it was all sorted out. Good thing I kept the shipping receipt or I would have owed a ton of money since it was not in their records as received. I got rid of them due to a line being cut somewhere are it taking 6 days to fix it.
I dropped cox for a similar billing issue too, they offered me a free UFC PPV if I would try one month of free phone service. They charged me for the PPV and phone service, took 3 months to fix.
They all suck!

I guess I am lucky since I haven't had any billing or contract issues with uverse. My only problem is that my wife can't seen to figure out how to work the TV.

Tried uverse 2 years ago, cancelled in the trial period and still got a bill, called, disputed, got it taken care of, a month later I receive a bill with a late fee, called again, got it taken care of.
