The collars do work. And the automatic ones are better than manual remote because they work all the time. Something to think about...if you have a privacy fence it can make some dogs bark because they hear noises but can not see out of the fence. If the fence is wood, cut a dogs eye level slot in the fence and cover it with hardware cloth or expanded metal.

The probes will wear into their neck if left on all the time, causing an open wound and infection

I have a dummy collar for my britt to wear. Weighs the same as the real deal, The points are just nubs, and don't chafe the neck.
Sadly, my wife has made him collar smart. I still have him under voice control when I let him out though.

The bark collars are the way to go. Nothing worse than a dog that barks constantly.

Hmmm.... I need to do some research on this method to find out exactly WHAT is so horrible about it.

Basenjis don't bark, do they?

Dogs don't normally bark. Its a learned trait.
My dogs have never been around a barking dog since we live in the sticks, and consequently don't bark at all.

Having a dog debarked, is a simple medical procedure that does not hurt the dog. They are put to sleep, and the vocal cords are snipped. The dog can still bark, it just sounds like their horse and in a whisper. How is that cruel?

It's a medical procedure that permanently removes dogs ability to make any noise louder than a wheeze. No animal deserves to live it's life with its vocal chords removed - or silenced.
