Interesting read on "bugging out" called "The Bug Out" by David Crawford (author of "Lights Out").

thought that it would apply to more of us than we care to admit.

I have it in PDF if anyone wants to read it. About 50 pages.

Necro but relevant - Crawford has a new book out called Collision Course about a fella who executes his bug out plan on an ATV. Not bad reading...nothing like Hemingway but it's a good time passer.

Have you done much hiking/backpacking with the kids arkmark? Not camping, but packing. You're not going to get far on foot with a couple of kids. You and your family just can't hump enough weight to make it a viable alternative. Water, shelter, food, self-protection, clothing, gear for 4 people makes it impractical. The only way you might make it doable would be to bury caches along your route months or years beforehand.

One one those rice burner 4x4 Kei trucks or vans might work with that plan, too. Plus, they are street legal in
Oklahoma except for on the major highways and turnpikes.

Maybe. The book is a quick read...and takes an interesting twist with one of the main characters.
