Expecting an individual who just perpetrated an irrational act to act rationally or "typically" during or after the event is irrational in and of itself.
Countless perpetrators of mass murder have ended up surrendering or being captured quite non-violently over the years....so this case is not unique.
There is some rational speculation out there that the booby trapped apartment was originally intended to be a diversion before the shooting...copy cat of the Oslo murders (loud music blasting from apartment intended to spur an entry followed by explosion and subsequent draw of more emergency personnel away from theater area etc...). Once that failed for whatever reason, in the aftermath of the shooting, he probably had a case of verbal diarrhea...and as was already mentioned, the hours of footage surrounding his apartment added to his notoriety.
Because he thought the booby trapped apartment had already gone up in flames taking some people along and wanted to make sure and take credit for it.
The neighbors said that loud music came on at exactly midnight and went off at exactly 1am.(alarm clock?) The first 911 call was 12:39am.
Someone, neighbor or police, was supposed to enter that apartment shortly after midnight on a noise complaint and set off the trap that had he had laid which would create a large response of police to his apartment.
Meantime, he would be in the movie theatre committing the real homicidal act that was the purpose of the whole plot.
This guy has studied Anders Breivik and copied his tactics.
Brevik did the same thing; He set off a large explosion that attracted police like a magnet to the scene while Brevik was at the same time shooting teenagers one by one on that island.

i could have swore i heard on the teevee that when it was first unfolding, they said that leos had already raided his apartment. this would have been early saturday. anybody else see/hear that? i will google it later.
Shooting timeline
Again, the alarm clock/radio in his apartment began playing loud music at midnight and ended precisely at 1am.
- At 12:05 a.m. MT, "The Dark Night Rises" started to play at the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center, where throngs had gathered, some dressed as characters from the highly anticipated Batman sequel.
- According to ABC News, Holmes bought a ticket to the movie and went into the theater as part of the crowd. After the movie started, he left through an emergency exit and propped open the door. Then, he donned riot gear and re-entered the theater, tossed two gas canisters and began shooting into the crowd at about 12:38 a.m. MT
- At 12:39 a.m. MT, hundreds began calling 911 to report the shooting, according to Aurora police.
- A witness told ABC News that it all happened during a shooting scene in the movie, leading moviegoers to believe it was some sort of stunt for the film.
- The gunman slowly walked up and down the theater aisles, shooting at random people. There was no word of any motive.
- 12 people were killed and a total of 58 people were injured. Most of the victims were admitted with gunshot wounds, while some were being treated for shrapnel wounds. Eleven people were in critical condition as of Friday night, according to Gov. John Hickenlooper.
- Law enforcement officials were on scene within a minute and a half of the incident. Twenty-five police officers first responded to the scene, eventually 200 officers were on the scene.
- At about 12:45 a.m. MT, James Holmes was identified as the suspect and was arrested without incident near his car parked behind the theater. He was carrying three weapons, including a .223 caliber Smith & Wesson assault rifle equipped with a drum magazine, which can hold upwards of 100 rounds, a Remington 12 gauge shot gun, and a .40 Glock handgun. A fourth handgun was found in the vehicle.
- At the time of his arrest, Holmes spoke of possible explosives in his home. Investigators evacuated his apartment complex and four other surrounding buildings at about 2 a.m. MT. Police say the apartment was booby-trapped and loaded with incendiaries and small improvised explosive devices.
