We just started here. Unfortunately it was just spending money and looking for the right kinds of things to use.
Next year we will be using more homemade things, the skeletons eyes for example I have ordered multiple sets.

Wifey is going to be a zombie with a hole shot through her. She has been harping at me for years to fix up the illusion so I finally tore into my security cameras stash and figured out two cameras and two monitors all on a 12 VDC system.
Proof of concept right here. Now she just has to come up with a tunic or something to attach these to.
We had some el cheapo TVs so we could watch the weather inside the shelter and I had a few old ATM cameras in a box.

Fog machines do a lot for "atmosphere." Simulate graveyard low level fog. Eirie when black, blue or green light passes through it too.
