I don't blame them one bit. When your not allowed to do your job, and your personal safety is in jeopardy, it doesn't take a lot of thinking to follow the retirement path.

My only concern with this is about who is now going to be the "command authority?" If the mayor steps in to "command," I'd be worried about the safety of the police, firefighters, and paramedics.

I'd say their safety is up to them. Besides, the most likely order from the civilian authority in this case is "do nothing to upset these brave warriors for justice". Well... OK!
