I don't usually say much on this forum (outside the occasional smarta$$ comment) and certainly try to stay out of the bickering but this is something I have a very strong opinion about:

There are no percentage points to be given here as far as blame goes and that's the problem with people and society in general. We as a society do not hold ill willed poeopl accountable for their own actions as we should and it permeates the populace. It is NOT the woman's fault that HER pistol was taken from HER vehicle at HER house. I don't cre if she left it lying on the hood of the car, I personally would not "blame" her for the theft. Admittedly there could have been more precautions taken but still not her fault that someone else took something that didn't belong to them.

If you deduce that she is to blame and you follow that line of thought to the extreme then one would naturally have to assume that if your child was playing in yard and was abducted it would not be 100% on the abductor, after all you should know there are bad people in the world so it's your fault they decided to take your child. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Things are simple to me. "If it' not your and you take it you are a thief and YOU should be held accountable for your actions...PERIOD!!" I also don't believe insanity is a reason to not be punished for murder.

I'm kinda with RickN on this deal, as I believe a chickens#$t thief will break into a car before he would attempt a breach of a house. I very seldom leave anything in my car I can't live without easily. And I never leave a gun in my car as giving a chance to put a stolen gun on the street is just not acceptable in my book. You've got dumb butt thiefs out there that would steel an old worthless .22 revolver out of your car that was stored next to your $350 Oakley sun glasses...oh and leave the sun glasses!!!!????

If they break into the car and find the gun it may also give them more of an incentive to then break into the house?

Ive lived just outside Coweta/Wagoner county about 13 years now and have a couple of rent houses in town in Coweta. Its a small town with a great police force but some criminal stuff does go on out here even tho personally all Ive ever had happen are smashed mailboxs during graduation week. I personally do not and would never leave a gun overnight in a vehicle tho, even out here in the country in my locked gated driveway. Still, I dont think a victim of a theft crime should be burdened with any guilt no matter where the object was stolen. How is in the safe in the house any different than in the safe in the car? You have to get thru at least two security systems in both locations to get to the gun- unless you left the door unlocked and the gun not in a safe either location, and or they just took the safe too. IMO the responsibility rests with the thief no matter what and where.

No guilt meant to anyone, specifically. It's just my opinion that you shouldn't leave anything inside your car you can't live without. Cars are just quick easy targets. I believe that folks will smash-and-grab stuff from a car before they would graduate into the ideology of breaking into houses. I live in Coweta and it is a cool little town. At the same time I don't think it is immune from a smash and grab from a car. But I do think your gated driveway affords you a bit more separation from a standard criminal. That's why our gate is always shut too! Oh, and our pit bull that's nice to some people is a small deterrent...maybe nice to very few people actually.

To be clear. I also never leave guns in the vehicle (rag top Jeep) as I know it's an easy target. My only point was that it's inappropriate and sends the wrong signal to blame the rightful owner of anything that's stolen regardless of the circumstances.

If a dope fiend breaks into my car and steals my Rx, am I 25% to blame for his possession charges? 25% to blame if he downs my Viagra and goes on a raping spree? 25% to blame if he takes all my Xanax and drives through a crowd of WLM protesters?

(just to clarify, I take zero prescriptions, but you get mah drift)

I have a hard time understanding blaming the victim of a theft - that's freaking retarded.

Can we meet and the middle and form the reasonable opinion that it's not the theft victim's fault, but it's still prudent to not leave a gun in a vehicle overnight? Or do we have to take sides?
