Many do it that way. They just don't tell about it.
My favorite way is to spend $30 on gas, $12 (wonder where?) gettin' in, $300 on a gun and $30 on a plate of Mexican and a couple of Margaritas. Later, I get lucky and sell the gun for $300 and tell everyone I broke even on that one.
