I have a relative that sent cash in a birthday card and when it arrived at its destinatio, the corner of the envelope was torn off and.money gone.
The wife will sometimes send cash in a card and I tell her to write on the front, "photos enclosed please do not bend.". So far so good nut now the secrets out...
Personally, I figure the.money is gone anyway so what the neck if $20 or so is lost in the mail. Either way its gone.

We've had birthday cards with money in them go missing before too. Hasn't happened in a while, but it definitely happens.
This is where mail is the most vulnerable. If you're not going to clip it to your mailbox for carrier pick up (rurals your box/flag option is also high risk) then take a moment to park and walk it inside the PO.
I thought checks was the only reason that the USPS still exists?
