Here, but occasionally There.
Whatever you do, make sure that the kids get training in "defensive driving." After our two boys got their cars, they kept being involved in accidents, although neither was at fault. It seemed like every six months, I was out after work looking for a used car for one or the other of them.

Took my youngest out one evening and just drove around the city. Occasionally, I would ask a question like "what do you see ahead of us that could be a problem?" After a bit of him noticing that a car might not stop at a stop light/sign, I then had him be alert to possible problems instead of me asking about them.

After that lesson, his problems pretty much diminished, and he seldom ever has had an accident since.

Way back when, getting your drivers license was a BIG deal,,,
Now I know two families with kids (one is 18 and the other is 19),,,
Who not only don't have their licenses don't seem to be in a hurry to get one.

I was shocked to find out the hoops a kid goes through to get one now,,,
Gone are the days of getting a learners permit at 15 1/2,,,
And going to the place and testing on turning 16.

Several friends of mine have gone the "driving school" route,,,
Where the kids get (sic) professional instruction,,,
And a fast track to the testing facility.

One friend said it took them 3 months just to secure a testing time,,,
Something about having to call a number at OHP,,,
Hoping to score one of the available slots.

Yeah, we just went through that with our youngest. Took forever to get things done even with driving school.

My guess 12 to 15 1/2 seemed like the longest years of my life waiting to get my permit. You are correct it was a big deal back in the 70's. I still remember it like it was just yesterday.
