Why is a back up weapon a good thing?

In case our primary fails or is taken from us.

lets say we have several backup guns; half of which dont share ammo with the other half. What possible scenario has been envisioned that led us to that decision? That is what I want the OP to answer, or anyone else for that matter.

Why is it better to have 6 guns instead of say two with more ammo instead?

Oh, he is just going through that phase, he'll get tired of it eventually and start rotating two for a while, and then just drop to one - the most handy and convenient. The next step for him will be optics and holsters. As long as he's not a Bernard Goetz he might be fine.
