Well, I have a Spike's Punisher lower and plan on buying a rifle kit from FBT. I'd prolly just get different calibers since I just noticed that you can get one that can shoot the 7.62x39. I'm just curious what people's opinions were on the different brands.

You may want to do more research before getting into 7.62x39 in an AR; there have been quite a few reports of problems with feeding, firing, and ejection of that caliber in an AR. I had two such builds, and I'd have an occasional FTE in both - perhaps 1 in 50 or 75 rounds. Nothing major if you're just plinking at the range, but if you're in a timed competition or worse yet, defending your home, you may not want to deal with that. Stick to AK's with that caliber is my humble suggestion.

When I build I try to use the best parts. You find that it costs about the same or a little more but in my opinion I want something that is going to work every time. You can save money in other areas of a build such as the stripped upper and lower receiver....because, as long as it is a certified name they are exactly the same. Aero precision lowers are like $70 whereas a noveske is more around $170. Good Bcg and good barrel and you are on the right path.

I'll just stick to my SKS then. I saw a listing on Sooner's site with a Smith&Wesson that was chambered for the 7.62 and thought it was cool but if there are ejection problems... I'll pass. Lol

I'll keep that in mind when I'm building future ARs!

There are a lot of folks who think they are experts just because they've touched, owned, or their brother owns an AR-15. Lots of folks give lip service to "buying the best" right before they go into walmart and walk out with a Windham.

Most people shoot a few rounds a year during a full retard-session at a public range, throw it back in the closet and only pull it out for hero shots or brag sessions after a few beers.

In the end, buy what you can afford. Shoot the piss out of it. Take some classes with it, and shoot the piss out of it some more. Then you'll figure out what you need or want. Most confuse the two terms.

good advice!!

I highly recommend the S&W M&P 15 Sport. I paid $650 after tax. I love it. The exact same gun can be purchased at Grabagun for $566. At that price you can't go wrong. I can easily shoot sub MOA at 100 yds. using a variety of 55 gr. ammo. My gun loves the Fiocchi 40 & 50 gr. vmax, American Eagle varrmit tipped, Hornaday v-max. It also shoots wolf gold and american eagle fmj good as well. The only modifications I have made are a yellow JP trigger spring kit $11.00 (I highly recommend this kit before spending $150 on a new trigger), burris scope mount $59.00; and a Nikon P-223 3x9 scope $140.00.

My nephews and I have no problem hitting a plow disc gong at 300 yds. 10/10 times. My gun rides in my truck or on the front of my atv. It gets covered in dust. I have cleaned it exactly once. It has never failed or malfunctioned in any way with over 2,500 rounds down the pipe.

The gun is accurate, reliable and in expensive. What more could you ask for? There are a bunch of good choices but you can not go wrong with this rifle my opinion. I would definitely buy again. I will probably add the M&P 10 this year.

Also, do not listen to anyone who tells you, you need to remove the front sight or mount a scope above the front sight. You can not see the front sight in through anything with a 2x or larger magnification. I cannot tell you have many times I read on various forums questions about how to remove the front sight. It will not interfere with your scope at all, and if your scope fails you have immediate back up sights.

Good luck!

I've two DPMS Sporticals - their most inexpensive rifle - in .223 and .308 versions. The .223 has been flawless since day one. The .308 had some FTE problems and went back to them twice, they paid shipping both ways both times, and since it came back the second time hasn't missed another beat in a bit over 600 factory rounds and a couple hundred reloads. Both are as accurate as pretty much any other standard (i.e., non-match non-performance tuned) AR, which means they're better than this shooter anyway.

(edit) I'm also in the process of a build using a Del-Ton barrel, so yeah, I'm a "value conscious" consumer :) (/edit)
