If the yeti's are that much better and I was in an industry where my business involved keeping things cold longer I may be able to justify the huge costs. Me, I just can see spending that coin on an ice chest.

And ice chest death match article was a little disingenuous. I'm not engineer but would think that if you fill two coolers with the same amount of ice, one with a much smaller cubic foot interior compared to a much large cubic foot interior, the larger interior ice chest would have a harder time keeping the inside cold with cubed ice. Sort of like asking a window a/c trying to keep a 1000 square foot room as cool as a 100square foot room. Not really apples to apples. If you dump a one pound bag of ice in a salad bowl it will last longer than if you dumped the one pound bag of ice on the counter top next to the salad bowl.

Well, I had hoped that the coleman xtreme 120 quart I picked up on Wednesday was going to be as good as I've read. Now there's a good chance I'm doing something wrong, but after filling it with refrigerated food I put in 16 lbs of ice over it, and set out for a weekend camping trip. It wasn't in the shade the entire trip, in fact most of the time it was probably in the back of the van. Temperatures where we were camping probably in the low 80s during the day and 60s at night. The cooler was only opened to get food out to cook, drinks were kept in a separate cooler.

I bought ice twice since Wednesday night, I'm not sure I had to, but I didn't felt comfortable not buying ice at that point. Coming back today, and I'd say 90% of that ice was water.

Honestly, I'd be hard pressed to feel or see a huge difference between the older coleman coolers and this new xtreme one. After handling yeti's, igloo sportmans, and pelicans I can definitely tell a difference. I'll admit I've gone from someone that was thinking 300+ for a cooler was a waste to someone that's actually considering it.

Anyone know a distributor for pelicans?

I wouldn't waste my money on another yeti. 2 bags of ice and a 30 pack that was fridgerated don't last 2 days. But I drink beer and I tell you, it don't keep much better than the cheapo ones.

My Coleman extreme will hold ice just a a long as my yeti. Use the yeti at work, company paid for it, and I use Coleman for keeping meat cold for days on camping trips. YMMV.

Ice retention depends on a lot of things. How often and how long the lid is opened; inside temp of cooler before use; temp of contents when put in the cooler; amount of ice put in the cooler. You always want to fill the cooler with as much ice as possible. Don't leave any open air in there. I keep my Yetis indoors to keep the temp of the cooler down. I want it as cool as possible before using. I'm sure any high end cooler does just as good of a job keeping ice. I almost went with the Deepblue Engel cooler because they were cheaper, but at the end if the day went Yeti. No regrets.

Cabelas now has a branded line of these coolers that I believe are made by the same people that make the Yeti and are slightly less expensive.
