I think people are afraid to intervene in fear of being harmed #1 and the fear of being sued #2 that prevents them from assisting. Society is teaching people to not fight back and submit vs back in the day when you were almost obligated to assist others in need of help because that is what people do. There are actually some laws in effect to this day in states that say if you don't assist in that situation you could be charged, but I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for that. Feel good legislation most likely. And it doesn't make it any better that the three guys inside the building just standing there watching her get beat and then closing the door appear to be black. Phucking cowards!!! IMO, that makes them just as racist as the attacker. Silence is consent, right?
Indeed. And now, many of those descendants just want an opportunity to better themselves. That's some irony for you. The reason that Asians-and Mexicans too-are here in the first place isn't fundamentally different than the reason why blacks are here. Asians were basically brought over here as slave labor in the railroad boom of the 1800s. The nomenclature was carefully chosen and more subtle means were used to coerce them into the railroad gangs, but the conditions and lack of ability to leave those conditions were the same.
This practice wasn't even limited to non whites, though. Lots of Irish, German, and Italian immigrants were treated in the same manner. When their respective countries were going through a time of crisis, they were given the option of coming over here to perform menial labor while living in hellish conditions.
Basically everyone here today put their blood, sweat, and tears into this land, or is the descendant of someone who did.
Give me a break!!!! How can they intervene to protect someone else when they can't even protect themselves?Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio criticized the lack of intervention after video footage showed security guards declining to intervene directly.
“New Yorkers cannot stand by silently while a fellow New Yorker is attacked,” he tweeted.
