FedEx Cargo Plane Fire Causes Flights To Divert From Tulsa International Airport

TULSA, Oklahoma -
Tuesday, June 7th 2022, 10:29 pm
Passengers are happy to finally be back in Tulsa, after a fire on a cargo plane forced Tulsa International Airport to close its runways, causing flights to be diverted to Oklahoma City.
The runways were only closed for about 30 minutes, but it added hours to some people's travel time when planes were forced to fly in circles above the airport.
“[We] appreciate your patience with us. Some unforeseen circumstances that we just can’t deal with or get around, but we’ll get you there as quickly and safely as we can," said a Pilot who was forced to fly to OKC for fuel.
One man went from Doha, to Dallas, to Tulsa, to Oklahoma City, and back to Tulsa.
“My travel started 30 plus hours ago," said Leconte Lee.
Lee was on the final leg of his trip home from Malaysia when his plans went 'up in the air.'
“I’m super tired right now so I’m a little delirious. I don’t know what I’m saying English," said Lee.
Airport officials said a FedEx plane was flying from Sacramento to Memphis, when a fire started in the cargo hold, and the plane diverted to Tulsa International Airport.
The airport's firefighters responded, with the help of the Tulsa Fire Department Hazmat Unit.
“My husband Josh and I were looking at each other like what’s going on,” said Jessica Fausset, passenger.
The Faussets are visiting Tulsa from Florida with their four kids.
“There were a few babies on the plane. Mine aren’t little anymore, so it was okay," said Jessica Fausset.
Their 40-minute connection from Dallas turned into over two hours.
"I realized that we were circling a long time,” said Fausset.
They flew to Oklahoma City to refuel, where passengers were given the option to deboard.
Lee said when they landed in Tulsa this afternoon, some clapped while others sighed in relief.
“I’m here which is all that matters,” said Lee.

I normally have good results with UPS, but I went through an ordeal with them last week before my package magically appeared 3 days after a no-show and no updates (other than to say it was delayed).

I’m waiting 2 weeks on something that was picked up by UPS, and then apparently it vaporized because it hasn’t been seen since.

They all suk. Don’t kid yourself, they’re all terrible, and it ain’t just them. Customer service is non-existent these days. I’ve reached the end of my patience with several different restaurants and other places in the last few months. I’m not going to spend my money with people that act like I’m a bother and just can’t be troubled to do things correctly, and don’t care when you complain after they’ve lost your order, sold you the wrong thing, or can’t find something you left to be repaired. It’s bizarre, and it is endemic.

Sales Reps field complaints from customers and take it to management, and management doesn’t wanna hear about it. Fire the sales people; problem fixed.

Customer still complains, but it’s to the shipping or customer service people, and they don’t give a s***, so they don’t take it to management. Management now happy. Customer still pissed, but out of options. Forced to do business with s****y companies that don’t care about anything to do with the customers.

As a person that tackles process improvement projects as part of my career, there are so many moving parts in a distribution center. I am sure there could be improvements found in multiple places, but I would be surprised if there is any low hanging fruit left.

We bought a new mattress and adjustable base from Mathis Brothers. The delivery guys didnt have one of the pillows or the mattress protector on the truck. I spent an hour and a half at the Sleep Center working with some awesome people to try and sort out the best way to correct the issue. I wanted to pick them up because we didnt have a compatible mattress protector for the split top mattress, but I didnt want to be reassessed for OKC sales tax when it shouldve been delivered to Canadian County. They agree to ship UPS. 2 days later UPS drops off a pillow and a small box intended up NAPA on Memorial with the routing sticker from my package stuck to it. My tracking number showed delivered, so I am not sure how they got it figured out. We ended up getting our mattress protector the next business day so it all worked out.

All of that is to say that there are numerous opportunities for a small hiccup to turn into a huge headache when it comes to logistics. Its thousands of processes all hinging and timed on the assumption that the preceding step will execute perfectly every time. Also, even having a fairly solid understanding of shipping processes, I still swear up a storm when I really need something at a certain time and it doesnt happen.
Yep. No one ever complains about the 97% that arrive on time to the right address.

Be sure to tell the drivers how much they suck when delivering your package in the rain and putting in a 12 hour shift. Oh, wait, that'll get the "they signed up for it" remarks and "if they don't like it then find another job" comments so damned if you do and damned if you don't.

OkieMoe - I thought Freight had a better 'experience' than Express or Ground but sounds like since the pandemic they've gone to crap also.

FedEx Ground uses contractors, not employees, and they generally don't care nearly as much. Keep in mind that as the older workforce retires the younger ones don't have the passion or desire to work as hard and would prefer to have an online business. Very similar to the shortages of tradesmen like plumbers, electricians, mechanics. Younger generation doesn't want those types of jobs(for the most part).
