We elect them to make some decisions. They don't have unlimited powers.

And I'm pretty sure "statue removal" and "school renaming" aren't listed anywhere in their job decriptions.

It's a good thing the community gets to decide if it is ridiculous, or not; hence, the discussion. You seem to be advocating for shutting down the discussion before its even started, in which case nobody would know what the community really thinks about it.
