Much like with a sex offender registry, there are crimes that are classified as "Sex crimes" that bear little to no resemblance to the true menaces of society.

Maybe it's urban legend, feel free to correct me, but urinating in public can often be classified as a sex offense. Not that we should encourage urination in public, but depending on the situation, it's hardly as heinous as child pornography or molestation.

Yep. I know a guy that was at a party, left, and since the street was totally dark with no street lights, he pee'd at his vehicle. What he didn't know was that a neighbor was on her porch after calling LEO to report loud music. They rolled up before he could leave. She pointed out the wet spot in the street, and he spent 10 years as a convicted sex offender even though his back was to her.

Finally got enough money to go back to court, and got off the list.

I always thought that if anyone was dangerous enough to be on any sort of list, be it sex-offender, gun crime, violent crime, etc. then they really have no business being released back into society anyway. The cognitive dissonance that is present when someone says "well this person is going to be allowed to reintegrate into society, but because they diddled a kid and are still dangerous, we will put them on a list and tell their neighbors" is stunning. If they are really that dangerous, then our sentencing laws need to be changed so that these people aren't allowed back into society ever.

The same thing with gun crimes. I personally think that anyone who commits any violent crime with a firearm should go to prison for life. that way, gun crime IS reduced, violent crime is reduced, recidivism among violent offenders drops to near zero, and we don't have to go down the "slippery slope" of putting people on this list or that list.

Why are gun offenders worthy of special attention? Why not just an offender list?

We have to get out of the box the anti-gunners have created.

Gun crime is crime. Gun violence is violence. Criminals are criminals regardless of what tool they used in the course of their crime.
+100.
