eotechs will mount directly on the rail of the upper receiver. if you want it raised higher then get a mount for it, but they're not necessary.
Well I just ordered an Aimpoint M2 with mount. I appreciate all of the help you guys gave. Should go great with his S&W M&P 15.

You're saying 7-10 years life. Is that with the sight left on constantly or just as you use it?
I have a CompM2. It uses a DL1/3N battery. While not found in every store, they are not difficult to source. I have had the sight nearly four years, and have never turned it off.
Well to be fair, that's because you can't turn it off right?

Aimpoints are legendary for their battery life. They don't utilize the same technology that other red-dots use (that's part of what makes them friggin awesome - that, their weight, their low-cost compared to other high-end optics, and their durability).
