They have never seen the server room or a switch rack in the telecom closet.

They are completely clueless what a mail server is and they certainly don't understand that the email they send always routes through at least one mail server (the recipients), usually routes through at leasr 2 mail servers and frequently routes through 4 or more mail servers on the way to its ultimate destination.

Unless you're operating a stand alone system with no connection to any other system, everything goes somewhere. The "cloud" is actually just about every connected server on the web. Any data entrusted to the "cloud" actually gets passed around more than naughty playing cards in a little league team.
